One of the primary elements of your Personal Story is communicating why you are interested in a particular job. In today’s market, there is tremendous competition for jobs. If you can not make a credible case which demonstrates your particular interest in an industry and for a specific position, then you will not be successful. There are three things you need to consider when making your case.
Demonstrate good knowledge of the industry
You must be sure to communicate that you have a good understanding of the industry. If you mention industry terms, you need to also back up this response and tell me what these terms really mean. If you mention a specific term you should be prepared to define that term in under 20 seconds. That is how you know that you actually understand the term. In addition, there are a number of things that you can reference in your discussion that might give me a stronger sense of your knowledge and understanding, including industry trends, the key competitors, different types of products & services, etc.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of the position
You need to demonstrate real knowledge of the actual position you are interested in. Things you might want to reference to demonstrate knowledge of the position include: the types of analysis that are performed in this role or the types of deliverables that are handed off to managers or clients.
Demonstrate an interest in this opportunity through current & past experiences
You need to demonstrate your interest in this particular job by detailing specific current and past experiences that illustrate that interest. Anyone can say that they are interested in a particular industry, but is says a lot if you have purchased books, interned, taken classes or attended conferences related to the opportunity. Recruiters want to make sure that this is not a job that you heard about from a friend and decided to pursue at the last minute. There is a huge difference between "demonstrating" your interest and merely "telling" me that you are interested
