Your main focus when networking should not be, “can this person get me a job;” instead, you should consider what you want to learn from this individual about the current job market, field you’re interested in, groups to join, advice, or steps to take, etc. It is very important to keep in touch with your contacts beyond your job hunting efforts. Keep in touch with your contacts by finding out what is going on with them and letting them know updates about yourself. Additionally, if one of your contacts gives you a job lead, or puts you in touch with a contact, you should send them a thank you letter, which can be done by email. Ultimately, you should know that each new person is a potential contact, you should be willing to learn about what they do, why they like it, and what they hope to achieve from the networking event, offer to help if applicable, follow-up on promises and keep in touch.
