If you haven’t gotten an evaluation of your internship performance you could consider asking your manager for a feedback session so that you can make the most of the time left. You may be excelling at some aspects but not as strong in others. The key here is showing that you are interested in doing even better if you can! Ask a few questions and do a lot of listening to what is being said. You may not have an offer yet, but take advantage of the internship to learn more about what else you need to learn. Your focus on maximizing your performance may even result in your manager being a great reference for another position you apply for. It's hard to give a strong opinion without understanding more of the context of the story. But in the end, there are a couple of lessons you can take away from the summer. (1) One lesson is that even though hard work is critical in any organization, success in business is often about more than that. Among dozens of other things, it's about fitting in culturally, showing passion for the work, selling yourself to those you work with, and being someone who others want on their team. Similarly, as "anonymous" mentioned previously, the ability to "ask for help and clarify things when necessary" is a skill organizations definitely look for. (2) Another lesson is that it's not only about the models you build and how good you are technically, but it's also how you deliver the information and the relationships you build with the people you work with. This is true in every profession, even the most technical ones. In this example, if you had a good relationship with the coworker, you might have leverage to ask the context of how he/she received an offer. The same might also hold true with your manager. (3) And one final takeaway is the importance of having sponsors. I won't take credit for the takeaway, since it's something John Rice mentions here on his GottaMentor profile. "As you demonstrate that you are competent and can get things done, it becomes all about the relationships. It is not who you know, but instead it is who knows you well and thinks highly enough that they will go to bat for you."

If you've already shown #1, now might be the time to work on those relationships and see if anyone will go to bat for you regarding a full time offer. After all, if everyone knows you do quality work like you said, and if you are a good fit for the organization, then I suspect you'll at least get the company's attention. But as a summer intern who has only been there a short time, don't overplay your "relationships" card. On the other hand, it probably make sense to really speak up about how much you like the company and that you'd be thrilled to come back, if that is the case.

In the end, I'd recommend that you do your best to leave a positive impression no matter how things turn out. The world is small and it's likely you'll run into someone at the firm again if you start your career in the industry. Similarly, if it turns out that the company has another opening, then it would probably consider you for the position. Make sure you make use of your remaining time and let them aware of what you are capable of, this will keep a good impression and when things come up they will remember and cross reference your performance and coaching towards Joe. Your friend has no problem asking for help and clarifying things when necessary. He probably does the same things with his supervisors, not just you. This puts him more in the spotlight and helps build relationships.

The "keep your head down and do your job" approach does not work, because like it or not business relationships must include personal relationships (even though superficial).

I'll explain using an analogy: suppose you love someone. You notice even the smallest things and they become important to you. Tell those small insignificant things to a friend and they'll look at you like you're crazy for caring about such trivial details.

As long as he's not completely messing up things, asking questions and asking people to check in on your work is seen as a sign of inquisitiveness and willingness to do the work right, even at the expense of your ego - when you ask someone else you admit you don't know.

So while you probably tought your friend about excel and such, you can also learn from him about building relationships.

I have one employee that is fantastic at the work he does and is very honest. However he's also very unpleasant and hard to deal with on a personal level. So he's stuck where he is because of this.

All life is built on relationships and those relationships are relative - even the business ones.

Request one from your manager as well, and ask him/her for a final meeting before you leave, not to ask why you didn't get the job offer but for performance review and feedback.

Lots to learn on an internship, some of it quite unexpected. Take time to reflect on the feedback you receive and the overall experience, and resolve to walk away with a stronger sense of how to make an impact. ...less
